Ella is a small but busy town in the Badulla District of Uva Province, in central Sri Lanka. It is approximately 200 kilometres east of Colombo. Ella is situated at an elevation of 1,041 metres above the sea level.
The region has a rich bio diversity dense with numerous varieties of flora and fauna. Ella is surrounded by hills covered with cloud forests and tea plantations. It’s what picture postcards are normally made of. The town of Ella has a cooler climate than the coastal areas of Sri Lanka, this is due to its elevation. The Ella Gap allows views across the southern plains of Sri Lanka and is breath taking.
Ella railway station is located 271.03 km from Colombo. The station opened in July 1918. The train from Kandy to Ella is a beautiful 7 hour ride that travels through tea plantations, jungle, and mountains. As the journey goes on, you travel higher and higher up into the highlands. This is where the big tea plantations and many beautiful waterfalls are. The 7 hours will be spent witnessing breath taking scenery so much that the time passes quickly.
Whatever you choose to do in Sri Lanka, it will be a unique and memorable experience of a lifetime, with a Guides4me guide, who will look after you and by the end of the trip you’ve made a best friend.
