Discover Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata sits on the beautiful north coast of the Dominican Republic, between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains of the Cordillera Septentrional. It is one of the country’s most colourful and interesting destinations. Visitors can experience historic streets, Caribbean beaches, local rum and cigar traditions, mountain scenery and the warm Dominican culture all within a relatively small area.

Puerto Plata Cruise Terminals

Puerto Plata has two major cruise terminals. Taíno Bay Cruise Port is located beside the city and is very convenient for exploring the historic centre. Amber Cove Cruise Terminal is situated at Maimón Bay, around 15 to 20 minutes by road from central Puerto Plata. The two ports are separate, so it is important that your guide knows exactly where your ship will be docking.

Cruise calls vary throughout the year. Taíno Bay regularly welcomes ships from major cruise lines including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Virgin Voyages. Amber Cove was developed by Carnival Corporation and is particularly popular with Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, together with other Carnival group ships.

Things to See and Do in Puerto Plata

There is far more to Puerto Plata than simply spending the day at the beach. A private tour can combine several different experiences, giving cruise passengers a real taste of the city and the surrounding area.

City Tour and Old Town Puerto Plata

Explore Puerto Plata’s historic centre with its colourful buildings, traditional architecture and lively streets. See Independence Square, local neighbourhoods and some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks while learning about its history and culture.

Rum Factory Experience

Rum is an important part of Dominican culture. Visit a local rum producer to discover how Dominican rum is made, learn about its history and, where available, enjoy a tasting. See poster below

Cigar Factory

The Dominican Republic is famous around the world for its premium cigars. A cigar factory visit gives you the opportunity to see the skill involved in selecting, preparing and rolling tobacco. It is also a fascinating introduction to an industry deeply connected with Dominican life. See poster below

Umbrella Street

One of Puerto Plata’s most colourful attractions is the famous Umbrella Street. Hundreds of brightly coloured umbrellas create a canopy above the street, making it one of the city’s favourite places for photographs.

The Pink Street

Visit Paseo de Doña Blanca, better known as the Pink Street. The buildings, walls and decorations are painted in striking shades of pink. It has become one of the most photographed locations in Puerto Plata.

The Seashore and Malecón

Enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere along Puerto Plata’s seafront. The Malecón stretches beside the Atlantic Ocean and is a great place to see local life, beaches and beautiful coastal views.

Mount Isabel de Torres

Rising high above Puerto Plata, Mount Isabel de Torres offers a completely different view of the area. The mountain is surrounded by tropical vegetation and provides spectacular views across Puerto Plata, the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.

Your tour can also include local markets, Dominican food, beaches, cultural attractions and hidden places that many cruise passengers never get the chance to see.

Book a Private Puerto Plata Shore Excursion

Booking a trusted friendly local Guides4me guide allows you to experience Puerto Plata at your own pace. There is no need to follow a large group or spend your limited time ashore visiting places that do not interest you. Your guide can meet you from Taíno Bay or Amber Cove and create the day around the things you want to see.

A local guide also knows how to make the best use of your time. They can introduce you to the people, culture, food and stories behind the places you visit. Most importantly for cruise passengers, your itinerary can be planned around your ship’s arrival and departure times, helping you enjoy Puerto Plata while allowing plenty of time to return to your ship before it sails.

Whatever you choose to do in Puerto Plata, it will be a unique and memorable experience of a lifetime, with a Guides4me guide, who will look after you and by the end of the trip you’ve made a best friend.
