Discover Batroun, Lebanon
Batroun is one of Lebanon’s oldest and most attractive coastal towns. It combines ancient history, Mediterranean beaches and lively streets filled with cafés and restaurants. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for travellers who want to experience Lebanon beyond its larger cities.
Where Is Batroun?
Batroun is located on Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast. It is approximately 50 kilometres north of Beirut and around 30 kilometres south of Tripoli. The journey from Beirut normally takes about one hour, depending on traffic. Tripoli can usually be reached in approximately 35 to 45 minutes. Its convenient location makes Batroun an excellent stop during a tour between Beirut and Tripoli. It can also be visited as a private day tour from either city.
Explore Batroun’s Historic Old Town
Batroun’s Old Town is filled with narrow lanes, traditional stone houses and charming courtyards. Visitors can walk through streets shaped by centuries of history while discovering small shops, churches and local cafés.
The town’s Phoenician Sea Wall is one of its most important historical attractions. Parts of the wall are believed to have been created from an ancient sandstone quarry. It once helped protect the coastline from powerful Mediterranean waves.
Visit Batroun’s Churches
Batroun has several beautiful churches that reflect its religious and cultural heritage. St Stephen’s Cathedral stands close to the harbour and is one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks. The small Our Lady of the Sea Church also offers a peaceful setting beside the coast. Its location provides wonderful views across the Mediterranean.
Relax by the Mediterranean
Batroun is known for its clear water, rocky coastline and popular beaches. Visitors can spend time swimming, relaxing beside the sea or enjoying watersports. The old harbour is another pleasant place to explore. Fishing boats, waterfront cafés and historic buildings create a traditional Mediterranean scene.
Taste Batroun’s Famous Lemonade
Batroun is particularly famous for its fresh lemonade. This refreshing drink is prepared using locally grown lemons and is perfect during Lebanon’s warmer months. The town also offers excellent Lebanese food. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood, grilled meats, mezze, hummus, tabbouleh and freshly baked bread. Local restaurants range from simple family-run establishments to stylish venues overlooking the sea.
Experience the Food and Nightlife
Batroun has developed a reputation as one of Lebanon’s most enjoyable coastal destinations. Its restaurants, rooftop venues and beach bars attract visitors from across the country. The nightlife can be energetic, especially during the summer. However, Batroun still retains its traditional character. Quiet streets, historic buildings and friendly local businesses can be found just a short walk from its livelier areas.
Discover Local Culture and Friendly People
Batroun’s culture has been shaped by its Phoenician heritage, Christian traditions and strong connection to the sea. Fishing, agriculture and family-run businesses remain important parts of local life. The people of Batroun are known for their hospitality and pride in their town. Meeting local residents can help visitors understand its traditions, stories and changing identity.
Explore Attractions Near Batroun
A private tour can include nearby villages, vineyards, coastal viewpoints and historic religious sites. Batroun can also be combined with Byblos, Beirut or Tripoli. Travellers heading north can continue to Tripoli to explore its souks, historic mosques, traditional sweet shops and impressive citadel.
