Discover Kazbegi

Kazbegi, officially known as Stepantsminda, is one of Georgia’s most spectacular mountain destinations. It lies around 150 kilometres north of Tbilisi, close to the Russian border, and the journey usually takes about 3 to 4 hours by road depending on traffic and weather. The drive follows the famous Georgian Military Highway and passes through some of the country’s most dramatic scenery.

The nearest major airport is Tbilisi International Airport (TBS). From the airport, travellers normally pass through Tbilisi before continuing north towards Kazbegi. Because the route includes mountain roads and changing weather conditions, many visitors choose to travel with an experienced local guide or driver.

The People and Culture of Kazbegi

Kazbegi has a strong mountain identity. Local communities have traditionally lived closely with the land, livestock and seasonal changes. Hospitality remains an important part of life, while Georgian food, religion and family traditions continue to shape the character of the region.

Visitors will also notice a quieter pace of life compared with Tbilisi. Small villages, traditional homes, local guesthouses and historic churches give the area a more rural atmosphere. The dramatic mountain setting adds to the feeling that Kazbegi is very different from the capital.

What to See and Do in Kazbegi

The most famous attraction is Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands high above Stepantsminda beneath Mount Kazbek. The church is one of Georgia’s most recognisable landmarks and offers outstanding views across the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Visitors can also explore Stepantsminda, enjoy mountain viewpoints and discover nearby valleys and villages. The area is ideal for photography, scenic drives and walks through the Caucasus landscape.

The Georgian Military Highway

The journey to Kazbegi is an experience in itself. Along the Georgian Military Highway, visitors can stop at Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress and several mountain viewpoints.

Further north, the road passes through high mountain passes and dramatic valleys. Depending on the route and conditions, visitors may also see mineral springs, rivers and snow-covered peaks.

Mount Kazbek and the Caucasus Mountains

Mount Kazbek dominates the landscape around Stepantsminda. On clear days, its snow-covered summit creates an impressive backdrop to Gergeti Trinity Church and the surrounding valley.

The wider Caucasus Mountains offer some of the most spectacular scenery in Georgia. Therefore, Kazbegi is especially popular with visitors who enjoy nature, mountain landscapes and outdoor experiences.

Food and Local Experiences

Traditional Georgian food is an important part of visiting Kazbegi. Local restaurants and guesthouses often serve hearty dishes suited to the cooler mountain climate, including khinkali, khachapuri, grilled meat, soups and fresh bread.

Visitors can also enjoy locally produced dairy products and traditional home-style meals. These experiences often provide a more personal introduction to life in the Georgian mountains.
