When visiting Sri Lanka you must spend an extra couple of days to visit the most northern part, called Jaffna. It is very much different from its central and southern parts of Sri Lanka.

The name ‘Jaffna’ comes from the Portuguese. The city was under Portuguese rule in the 1600’s. The name means “Port of the lyre”.

Jaffna is known for the famous Jaffna Library and Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil temple. Which is the most significant Hindu Temple in Jaffna. Both of these places you must visit.

There are many interesting things to do in Jaffna which will make your trip an unforgettable experience. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful churches on the beachside. As well as Nainativu island and Jaffna Fort.

You must visit Nainativu island.

Enjoy catching a boat to the island. There are a few wild horses and an ancient Portuguese fort to welcome you.

Jaffna Fort

Built by the Portuguese, this iconic fort is a must visit to discover the history of this magnificent architecture. After the Portuguese, the fort was overtaken by the Dutch who turned Jaffna into a trading centre. This ancient fort has witnessed many battles throughout time and now it has been restored.
