Before becoming a tour guide, Latifa worked in crafts, art and blacksmithing. Her creative background still shapes the way she sees Sicily, from its traditional craftsmanship and architecture to the small details that many visitors might otherwise miss.
Today, Latifa loves welcoming travellers from all over the world and introducing them to the culture, history and everyday life of Sicily. Discover Syracuse, Sicily
Syracuse is one of the most fascinating destinations in Sicily. Located on the south-eastern coast of the island, it combines ancient history, beautiful architecture, Mediterranean scenery and traditional Sicilian life.
The city was founded by the ancient Greeks more than 2,700 years ago. It later became one of the most powerful cities in the Mediterranean. Today, visitors can explore Greek ruins, Baroque squares, narrow streets and a beautiful waterfront all in the same day.
Explore Ortigia
The historic heart of Syracuse is Ortigia, a small island connected to the mainland by bridges. This is one of the most enjoyable parts of Syracuse to explore on foot. Narrow streets wind between historic houses, small piazzas, cafés, restaurants and traditional shops. There are wonderful sea views around almost every corner.
Visit Piazza Duomo
At the centre of Ortigia is the magnificent Piazza Duomo. The square is surrounded by elegant Baroque buildings and is one of the most beautiful places in Sicily. Walk to the Fountain of Arethusa
The Fonte Aretusa, or Fountain of Arethusa, is one of Syracuse’s most famous landmarks. It sits beside the sea and is closely connected with Greek mythology. Papyrus plants grow around the freshwater spring, creating an unusual and peaceful setting. From here, visitors can continue walking along the beautiful Ortigia waterfront.
Visit Castello Maniace
At the southern tip of Ortigia stands Castello Maniace. This impressive medieval fortress overlooks the Mediterranean. The surrounding waterfront is particularly attractive and provides wonderful views across the sea.

Where is Syracuse From Ragusa?
Syracuse works particularly well alongside Ragusa and Modica destinations. Ragusa is approximately 72 km by road from Syracuse, with the drive taking around 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic and the route. This means visitors staying in Ragusa can comfortably visit Syracuse as a day trip. It also makes it possible for a private guide to create itineraries connecting several of south-eastern Sicily’s most interesting destinations.
Where is Syracuse From Palermo?
Palermo is on the opposite side of Sicily. Syracuse is approximately 260 km by road from Palermo. Driving normally takes around three hours. For this reason, Syracuse is not somewhere I would recommend combining with Palermo on the same sightseeing day. It is much better to spend at least one night in the south-east of Sicily.
Visit Noto on the Same Day
Noto is one of the easiest towns to combine with Syracuse. This spectacular Baroque town is famous for its honey-coloured churches, historic palaces and elegant streets.
