“Latifa showed us parts of Sicily we would never have discovered on our own and shared her love of local culture, traditions and everyday Sicilian life. It felt less like a tour and more like exploring Sicily with a friend. We would highly recommend Latifa..” – Akhill, India.

Discover Ragusa, Sicily

Ragusa is one of the most beautiful towns in south-eastern Sicily. It sits among rolling hills, olive groves and traditional Sicilian countryside. The town is famous for its magnificent Baroque architecture, winding streets and spectacular views across the surrounding valleys.

Ragusa feels very different from Sicily’s larger cities. Life moves at a slower pace here. It is an ideal destination for travellers who want to experience a more traditional and authentic side of the island.

Explore Ragusa Ibla

The historic heart of Ragusa is Ragusa Ibla. This atmospheric old town was rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1693. Its narrow streets are filled with stone houses, churches, small squares and hidden courtyards. Simply walking through Ragusa Ibla is one of the best ways to appreciate its character. One of the main landmarks is the magnificent Duomo di San Giorgio. Its grand Baroque façade dominates the surrounding square and is one of Ragusa’s most recognisable sights.

Visit the Giardino Ibleo

At the eastern end of Ragusa Ibla is the beautiful Giardino Ibleo. These peaceful public gardens provide a wonderful place to relax after exploring the old town. There are palm trees, fountains, churches and viewpoints overlooking the Sicilian countryside. It is especially pleasant in the late afternoon when the temperatures begin to cool.

Discover Ragusa Superiore

Ragusa is divided into two main areas. Ragusa Ibla is the historic lower town, while Ragusa Superiore sits higher on the hillside. Exploring both provides a fascinating contrast. There are also several viewpoints where visitors can look down across Ragusa Ibla and see its maze of rooftops, church domes and narrow streets.

Visit Modica on the Same Day

Ragusa is perfectly located for combining several beautiful Sicilian towns in one day. Modica is one of the easiest places to visit alongside Ragusa. It is another spectacular Baroque town built across steep hills. Modica is also famous throughout Sicily for its traditional chocolate. Its chocolate-making methods have a long history, and tasting some locally made chocolate is almost essential when visiting.

Explore Scicli

Another excellent choice is Scicli. It is smaller and quieter than Ragusa or Modica, with beautiful Baroque streets, historic buildings and a relaxed atmosphere. Scicli is particularly enjoyable for travellers who prefer places that feel less crowded and more local. A day combining Ragusa, Modica and Scicli provides a wonderful introduction to this part of Sicily.

Take a Trip to Noto

Travellers with more time can also visit Noto, another of south-eastern Sicily’s great Baroque towns. Its elegant streets, churches and honey-coloured buildings make it one of the most impressive historic destinations on the island. Ragusa, Modica, Scicli and Noto form part of the remarkable Baroque heritage of south-eastern Sicily.

Experience Sicilian Food

Food is an important part of life in Ragusa. The area is particularly famous for Ragusano cheese, a traditional Sicilian cheese produced from cow’s milk. You may also find scacce ragusane, thin folded breads filled with ingredients such as tomato, cheese, vegetables or sausage.

Local restaurants serve pasta, fresh vegetables, seafood, meat and traditional Sicilian dishes. Desserts might include cannoli, almond pastries or granita. This part of Sicily is also surrounded by vineyards. Local wines, including Cerasuolo di Vittoria, make an excellent accompaniment to regional food.

Discover the Culture of Ragusa

Ragusa’s culture combines centuries of history with everyday Sicilian life. Traditional family businesses, cafés and markets still play an important role in the community. Religious festivals remain important too, while local craftsmanship, food and architecture reflect generations of Sicilian tradition. Spend some time away from the main streets and you begin to discover the real Ragusa.

Why Explore Ragusa With a Trusted Local Guide?

Ragusa is the type of destination where having a local guide can completely change the experience. A local guide can explain the stories behind the churches, architecture and neighbourhoods.
