Hoi An is one of the most charming towns in central Vietnam.
It sits on the coast, around 30 kilometres south of Da Nang. The drive takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic. This makes it very easy to visit both places in one trip.
Hoi An is calm and historic. Da Nang is modern and fast growing. Da Nang has high-rise hotels, wide roads and busy beaches. It feels like a working city. Hoi An feels like a step back in time. It is smaller, quieter and full of lantern-lit streets. If you want nightlife and big resorts, Da Nang is ideal. If you want culture, history and romance, Hoi An is perfect.
The heart of the town is the Hoi An Ancient Town. This UNESCO-listed area is famous for its yellow buildings and wooden shop houses. You can walk everywhere. No cars are allowed in certain streets at night. Colourful lanterns hang above you. The atmosphere is magical.
One of the top landmarks is the Japanese Covered Bridge. It dates back to the 16th century. Small but very beautiful. It shows the mix of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese influences in the town.
You can also take a boat ride on the Thu Bon River. In the evening, the river glows with floating lanterns. It is a wonderful place for photos. Many visitors also enjoy cycling through the countryside. Rice fields and small villages surround the town.
If you love the beach, head to An Bang Beach. It is only a short ride from the centre. The sand is soft and the water is warm. It is less busy than the main beaches in Da Nang.
For history lovers, a trip to My Son Sanctuary is highly recommended. These ancient Hindu temples are about an hour away. They were built by the Champa Kingdom many centuries ago.
By contrast, Da Nang is known for modern attractions like the Marble Mountains and the famous Golden Bridge. These sights are impressive and dramatic. Hoi An offers a softer and more traditional experience.
Booking a friendly local tour guide in Hoi An is a very good idea.
A local guide can explain the town’s history in simple and engaging ways. They can show you hidden alleys and family-run shops. You will discover places most tourists miss. A guide can also help with food recommendations and tailor-made experiences. This makes your visit richer, easier and far more memorable.
Whatever you choose to do in Hoi An or Da Nang, it will be a unique and memorable experience. With a Guides4me guide, you will feel safe, supported, and well looked after. By the end of your trip, you will have more than a guide, you will have a new friend.
