Meknes is a historic city in northern Morocco.
It is known for its calm charm and royal past. Once the capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismail, it offers a mix of grand architecture and relaxed atmosphere. It’s less busy than Marrakesh or Fes, making it a great spot for a quieter visit.
One of the top sights in Meknes is Bab Mansour, a huge and beautifully decorated gate at the entrance to the old city. Just nearby, you can explore El Hedim Square, a smaller version of Jemaa el-Fnaa, with food stalls, performers, and local goods. The Royal Stables and Granaries are also impressive, once built to house thousands of horses and store grain for the city.
The Medina of Meknes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, filled with winding streets, colourful souks, and traditional architecture. It’s a great place to shop for Moroccan crafts, from ceramics to textiles. Don’t miss the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, where the sultan is buried. It’s one of the few religious sites in Morocco open to non-Muslims.
Just outside the city, you can visit the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, a short drive away. These well-preserved ruins offer stunning views and a glimpse into Morocco’s Roman past. Meknes may be smaller than other cities, but it offers a rich mix of culture, history, and beauty that makes it well worth the visit.
Whatever you choose to do in Meknes, it will be a unique and memorable experience of a lifetime, with a Guides4me guide, who will look after you and by the end of the trip you’ve made a best friend.
