Highlights of Mycenae

Mycenae is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, located in the northeastern Peloponnese. It was a major center of Greek civilization during the second millennium BCE and gave its name to the Mycenaean civilization, which dominated mainland Greece between 1600 and 1100 BCE. This ancient city was once a powerful kingdom and is famously associated with legendary figures like King Agamemnon, a key character in Homer’s Iliad. Mycenae is approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Athens.

What to See in Mycenae:

Lion Gate:

The iconic entrance to the ancient citadel, built around 1250 BCE. Famous for its massive stone construction and the relief sculpture of two lions. One of the earliest examples of monumental sculpture in Europe.

The Cyclopean Walls:

These enormous stone walls surround the citadel and were believed by the ancient Greeks to have been built by Cyclopes because of their size.

Grave Circle A:

A royal cemetery within the walls, where archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann discovered golden death masks and other treasures, including the famous “Mask of Agamemnon” (now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens).

The Treasury of Atreus (or Tomb of Agamemnon):

A stunning tholos (beehive-shaped) tomb just outside the citadel, dating from around 1250 BCE. The entrance and dome are architectural marvels.

The Palace Complex:

Remains of royal buildings where rulers like Agamemnon may have lived. You can see the layout of the megaron (main hall), storerooms, and staircases.

The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae:

On-site museum displaying artifacts found in and around Mycenae, including pottery, tools, jewelry, and replicas of famous treasures.
